The Plan

Health Issues

All of Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating meals are prepared using the nutritional guidelines from health and nutrition experts.

If you or someone you know has any of the following medical conditions and needs to change eating habits, Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating is just what the doctor ordered.

Diabetes

A proper diet is one of the key elements that helps keep your blood sugar and diabetes under control. With the SSHE meal plan, you can be assured that you are always receiving calorie-controlled meals that are nutritionally balanced. SSHE recommends that you consult with your physician regarding which calorie plan to select. Some diabetics on SSHE have been able to reduce their insulin and many have been able to eliminate oral medication.

High Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy, fatlike substance that is found in all animal tissues, including meat, fish, poultry, egg yolk, and dairy products. If you consume too much cholesterol, which is easy to do if you don't pay attention to what you eat, it will deposit itself in your arteries. This causes your arteries to become narrow and clogged, putting you at risk for a heart attack and other forms of heart disease. The SSHE meal plan is low in fat and cholesterol - the perfect combination for a heart-healthy diet.

High Blood Pressure/Certain Cardiac problems

The SSHE meal plan is sodium restricted and calorie controlled. The combination of probable weight loss and sodium restricted meals could help lower blood pressure and decrease heart problems.

The overwhelming majority of Type II Diabetics will benefit from weight loss. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), type 2 diabetes accounts for 90-95% of all cases of diabetes and approximately 90% of patients with type 2 diabetes are overweight. -(American Diabetes Association: Type 2 diabetes (online))

Overweight patients with type II diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (often referred to as Borderline type II DM) can reap significant health benefits with modest weight reductions. Even when just starting on a lower calorie plan, before weight loss has started, a low calorie intake can produce significant reductions in blood glucsose levels. - Fabricatore & Wadden-Clinical Diabetes 2003)

Weight loss in diabetes helps in two ways: it lowers insulin resistance, thus allowing your natural insulin to do a better job at lowering blood glucose levels and it may allow for reduction or elimination of diabetes medicines. It also improves blood fat levels and blood pressure.

Sugar in Type II Diabetes... Having your cake and eating it too!

Almost every person with diabetes can have foods with sugar in them. Eating a piece of cake will raise your blood glucose level, but so will eating corn on the cob, a sandwich, or pasta. The truth is that sugar has gotten a bad reputation. In the body, sugary foods will send your blood sugar higher, but so will other foods, like the ones mentioned above.

Research studies show that, gram for gram, sugars, like table sugar, do not raise blood glucose any more quickly than do other carbohydrates, like potatoes, rice or pasta. This research holds true for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Basically, if you eat too much, your blood sugar will go up- no matter what kind of carbohydrates you eat.

According to the American Dietetic Association, there aren't "good foods" and "bad foods", rather good diets and bad diets.  Balanced, healthful eating for weight loss or maintenance is crucial for overall good health and part of every good diet.
